In 2008, an estimated 864,000 green Massachusetts Lobster bands were distributed! These bands label lobsters caught by Massachusetts fishermen that use sinking ground line, a method which reduces the risk of entanglement to large whales.
Massachusetts is the first and only state to require year-round use of sinking groundline in all state waters.
Groundlines made of floating rope rise up in the water column and can entangle large whales and other marine life, causing injury and mortality. The use of sinking groundline reduces the risk of entanglement by removing that rope from the water column.
